There might come a time in your life – or perhaps that time has already occurred – when you see a piece of art and think “I bet I could make that!” (Not in the dismissive way that people say “My two-year-old could paint that” but rather “That’s a good idea that seems within my range of skills.”)
I encourage you to rage, rage against the DIY art muse – she’s a Siren designed to lure you to a dimly lit basement sink with eight yards of burlap and four bleeding Rit dye packets.
These are the sails of a craft shipwreck.
Where would innovation and originality be without the DIY or art muse ?
Never mind if you’re disapointed with the result. On a first try there’s usually always some room for improvement.
Keep experimenting ! You do a great job !
Regards,
Rob
You’re right! Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Aw, you at least have to share what you were attempting to create! I’ve been curious since seeing those.
Okay, okay, I updated the post. I wasn’t going to do that piece of art exactly, but something pretty similar.
Thank you Marti. This helps. Also, you gave up too soon!
I gave up at just the right time. The good news is that I now have enough blue burlap to make a quilt for your forthcoming son.
ha! you’re overreacting! and that was burlap was weak-ass. try again! again!
Wait…what were you trying to do? I might be a little slow today…
Sorry for the confusion – I was too embarrassed to upload the inspiration for the craft fail! I updated the post.
Cool! Thanks :)
Remeber your re-creation of crotch camera?
GOOD POINT. That was a flawless recreation. Perhaps the muse only comes through for me on crotch-centric art projects.
Im missing something? What failed? rjr
Eh, my initiative, for the most part. The burlap is coarse and weak and started unraveling in the dye bath. I may try again if the spirit re-moves me.
Oh, the beloved art muse…
She’s a tricky one, that muse.
I am crying laughing. You are my long lost DIY blogging twin. I have quite of few of these craft fails on my blog if it makes you feel any better. I love reading when other do too b/c it makes me feel human. :) You know what may work if you want to try again? Food colouring. Or do what I would do buy the burlap in the colors already dyed. Sometimes time saving = sanity.
Ha! Thanks for commiserating.
maybe you could staple the burlap onto paint canvases of a variety of sizes and group them in an interesting way? Maybe to mimic the groupings on the inspiration pic? Your blog is a fun read!
Oh, that’s a good idea!
Whoa!!!! Well, failed or not – I applaud your effort!!!! Those are nice shades of indigo. Looks like a Japanese textile dream!!!
It’s funny you should mention Japanese textiles – the scarf I ordered after this project failed came from Fujisawa: https://projectpalermo.com/2012/12/11/the-framers-intent-diy-scarf-display/
I am not an artist but I always think “I can paint that!” Never tried and I’m quite scared to! Love that you went for the gold! Great job!
Thanks, Becca! It looks like you have a new home to decorate – you should try an art project of your own.
I love the colors of that burlap hanging to dry – you really need to something with it. Thanks for the smile today!
Thanks! The colors did turn out well. It was the burlap that was disappointing! I’ll give it another shot sometime.
