ORC Week 6: Mudroom Before and After

Welcome back, dear readers, to the season finale of "Marti Makes a Mudroom Less Gross." Before we get to the before and after photos, there are three more projects I need to cover for you: the flooring, the sliding door railing, and some shade trickery. This post is long, so settle in! You'll be rewarded [...]

ORC Week 5: Shelving, Litter Box, and Light Fixture

This stage of the One Room Challenge is challenging because I don't want to reveal too much of the room! I'm saving pulled-back shots for the final post – not that it's going to be a stunner of a space. As I've said, this is a functional room, not a showcase. Anyway, this is a [...]

ORC Week 4: Door Trim, Window Shade, and Plant Shelf

Just 2 weeks left in the One Room Challenge! Participating has definitely been fun and motivating for me – I have to plan out my projects to both get sh*t done and to ensure I have something worth reporting each week. Today, I'm focusing on the south wall of the mudroom. The original door trim [...]

ORC Week 3: Doorway Broom Closet

Welcome to Week 3 of the One Room Challenge, in which I'm trying to make our shoddy mudroom look and function better on the cheap. My previous two posts (Week 1 and Week 2) documented work done in 2016. This post is about a project I started and finished within the past week: a simple [...]

ORC Week 2: Drywall Finishing and So Much Painting

Hello again! It's Week 2 of the One Room Challenge – hop back to One Room Challenge Week 1: Mudroom Makeover for an introduction to this space. Let's cut to the chase on one issue I hesitate to even mention: there was lead paint on the ceiling and upper part of the brick wall. Two [...]

Hi! It’s been two years since I posted, but I haven’t been sitting idle. This year I kicked off a huge project: finishing our basement! I have a ton of backlogged content to share, so I’m going to break it up in stages in Stories. First up: architectural plans.
I shared some fun news in my IG stories today: our sunroom window project won a Driehaus Award from the Chicago Bungalow Association! Even if you don’t live in Chicagoland, the CBA is an awesome resource for information and inspiration. I’ve referenced their Bungalow Maintenance Guide continually as I work to preserve and improve our home. Thanks to @chicagobungalow for championing vintage homes!
New blog post is up: ✨The sunroom renovation reveal!✨ I plan to self-soothe with the before-and-after image sliders until we know who the next president is. Please join me! Link in profile. #chicagobungalow
This week I’m getting my neglected blog caught up on the sunroom renovation progress I’ve already shared here. The first post went up yesterday (link in profile). I plan to post photos of our finished sunroom by the end of the week. Here’s a sneak peek! Meanwhile, in IG Stories, I shared what I learned from the @chicagobungalow House Research 101 class – we need to take 3 candles off Hauslermo’s birthday cake…
Today I pulled down the tarp and we stood in our living room repeating “Wow. WOW.” This project has been in my brain for 5 years (swipe for the 2015 view) and now it’s here in the real world, bringing a transformative amount of natural light to our first floor. I can’t wait to fill it back up with plants! But first: cleaning and painting and moulding. @themarvinbrand
Thanks to everyone who’s shared in my excitement for our new sunroom and windows! There’s still a lot of work to do, but I am v happy. 💗
